Did you receive it as a Christmas gift, but are not yet familiar with how to use it? Mobiwisy offers you some tips before using your electric scooter for the first time.

Although many users of electric scooters prefer rental options, it is often more cost-effective in the long run to buy your own model, which often has better technical features than those in free-floating schemes. But you still need to know how to use it properly!

For those who have never used a PLEV, or personal light electric vehicle, the handling can sometimes be surprising. You first need to get used to riding it “standing up,” and as much as possible, place both feet one behind the other. Depending on the brands and models, space can be limited, especially for the most compact models.

Next, and unlike bicycles, braking is only controlled by a single trigger, while the accelerator is assigned to another trigger, often quite fragile!

1, 2, 3, go!

It’s time to start. Contrary to what one might think, despite its throttle control, you still need to propel yourself with your legs to start your PLEV. Just staying still and pressing the button will do nothing!

Among the essential rules for good scooter riding, it should be noted that only a rider (male or female) is authorized. However, it’s common to see many teenagers riding two on the PLEVs, which is strictly forbidden and especially very dangerous. It is also prohibited to carry objects on a scooter, wear headphones, or become detached from the surrounding sound environment. You must also ensure your scooter has all necessary safety features such as front and rear lights, a horn… And while not mandatory, wearing a helmet is highly recommended.

Insurance, an essential element!

When parking your vehicle, remember to deploy the kickstand properly. Also read the user manual carefully for folding and transporting your PLEV, as not all models are the same in this regard.

The second part of this article concerns the insurance of your scooter. Whether to prevent theft or to cover accidents (which are quite common), you should inform yourself before the first ride. Insurance is strongly advised, at least liability coverage. Otherwise, in case of an accident, you will have to cover all damages caused to the victim. These sums can often be very substantial.

Beware of winter

As you may have noticed, we are now in winter. A period that is particularly conducive to an increase in PLEV accidents due to poor visibility or slippery roads. While ideally, you should store your scooter in the garage during snow or ice, it is nonetheless important to adopt responsible driving, avoid accelerating too hard, and make maximum use of bike lanes. Ensure your scooter’s lights are on and wear appropriate clothing. There are fluorescent vests, clothes with reflective strips, glowing helmets, etc. If your model isn’t equipped with lights, it’s easy to find Bluetooth-compatible turn signals for a few euros. Safety is priceless!
