Lotus Achieves a Record in Malaysia

The Lotus Emeya has set a new record for an electric car at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

As Lotus continues its transformation into an electric vehicle manufacturer, the Sino-British brand is showcasing its commitment to its sporting heritage through various demonstrations. The latest took place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, where a Lotus Emeya 900 established a new record for an electric car.

Driven by GT driver Daniel Lu, the large electric sedan completed a lap in 2’20″317 on the 5.543 km Malaysian track. According to Lotus, this performance improves on the previous public record for an electric vehicle at this circuit, which was set at 2’27″790 by more than seven seconds.

Opened in 1999, the Sepang circuit is known for its demanding nature. Its long straights alternate with fast curves and heavy braking zones, testing the power, chassis, brakes, and aerodynamics of the cars.

Electric Dust in the Eyes?

For Lotus, this record serves primarily as a technological showcase. The Emeya is indeed a model that is quite different from the lightweight sports cars that built the reputation of the brand founded by Colin Chapman. With this demonstration, the manufacturer aims to show that a grand touring electric sedan can also deliver top-level performance on the track.

However, this type of exercise remains occasional. A single timed lap can highlight a vehicle’s acceleration, traction, and handling capabilities, but it does not predict its behavior over a long series of laps. Like most large electric sedans weighing over two tons, the Emeya must contend with a significant mass that could impact the durability of the tires, brakes, and battery during intensive circuit use.
