Mercedes is refining the development of its “long-range” electric truck, which will begin deliveries in 2024… similar to the Tesla Semi.

Silently, Mercedes is putting the finishing touches on the development of its eActros 600, which will be officially unveiled on October 10, 2023. The German manufacturer’s stated goal: “to be the most economical long-distance truck compared to a conventional diesel equivalent.” Who would have thought such a thing just a few years ago?

Tesla paved the way many years ago with the introduction of its Semi, but Mercedes’ expertise in trucks hauling such tonnage (39 tons) has allowed the German company to close the gap, and an initial range of eActros 300/400 tractors is already on the market. Volvo is also working on an electric offering and will be ready soon.

The start of production of the “long-range” eActros 600 version is scheduled for 2024, with around fifty pre-series units currently being tested with customers. The designation “600” is derived from the battery capacity in kilowatt-hours. Because Mercedes promises a range of 500 km under load without recharging, the battery will have a capacity of more than 600 kWh and a peak power of 600 kW (about 800 horsepower). Finally, thanks to its 800-volt electrical architecture, the Mercedes eActros 600 will accept up to 750 kW, similar to its American rival Tesla Semi, allowing it to recover 20 to 80% of the battery charge during a legal 30-minute break.
