Tesla Becomes an Electricity Supplier!

Tesla secures permission to sell electricity directly in the UK, marking a major milestone.

Tesla has reached a historic milestone in the UK: the American company is now not just a car manufacturer but a full-fledged electricity supplier. The UK energy regulation authority, Ofgem, has granted Tesla Energy Ventures Ltd. the right to supply electricity directly to homes and businesses in England, Scotland, and Wales, after an eight-month review.

This license completes a strategic puzzle set in motion in 2020 when the American company had already received permission to produce electricity in the UK through a separate subsidiary. Until now, it could inject its production into the grid but could not charge consumers directly. Today, Tesla can generate, store, and sell energy in an integrated manner, paving the way for the expansion of its program beyond the United States.

Tesla expands its scope of action

In Texas, Tesla Electric already allows vehicle owners and Powerwall users to take advantage of off-peak preferential rates and to sell their stored energy back to the grid during peak demand. This “distributed energy network” strategy transforms home batteries and electric vehicles into true virtual power plants. With over 250,000 cars already on the roads in the UK, the company has a customer base ready to engage in this innovative model.

Tesla is also betting on virtual power plants to stabilize the grid and reduce consumption peaks. The experience gained in the United States will serve as a springboard to replicate this model in Europe, consolidating Tesla’s position as a key player in the energy transition.
