Yamaha: Its bicycle motors will be produced in France

Integrating new bikes from the brand as well as from other manufacturers, Yamaha electric motors will be produced in France starting in 2024.
In the cycling sector, Yamaha is gradually establishing its presence. However, the brand had started very early, in the 1990s, with its first pedelec: the PAS in 1993. Refined over the years, these models, however, did not venture into the European market. Tentatively, the brand announced three bikes for 2023: a Crosscore RC hybrid bike, a Moro-07 mountain bike, and a Wabash RT gravel bike.
A “Made in France” electric unit
Rare on bicycles, the motor is made in-house, specifically a Yamaha. Moreover, it will soon be manufactured in France. The manufacturer will relocate production from Japan to the hexagon within a year, at the beginning of 2024. The MBK factory, a Yamaha-owned brand in Rouvroy (Aisne), near Saint-Quentin, will handle the production of this PWseries motor. Currently, this site produces approximately 80,000 motorized two-wheelers, 50,000 motorcycles, and 30,000 scooters, as well as quads.
This move is not just an ecological act, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint associated with production in a country with more lenient regulations, in addition to transport. Yamaha specifies that this relocalization will enable “significant reductions in logistics costs, which have been unreliable lately.”
The Japanese manufacturer highlights several advantages of local production, such as “considerably reduced lead times,” flexibility, and a decrease in undesirable events. Yamaha mentions, for example, the “port congestion,” but we also remember the famous Suez Canal container blockage that disrupted many industries.
A Yamaha motor, but also multi-brand
Yamaha bicycle motors are not exclusively fitted to the new Yamaha CrossCore RC, Wabash, and Moro models. Many brands incorporate these electric motors, such as Winora, Gitane, Lapierre, Haibike, or Babboe cargo bikes.
