Honda explores electric mountain biking with a radical concept

Honda electric bike

Honda surprised everyone by unveiling a fully suspended electric mountain bike concept, accompanied by a large external battery on wheels.

This conceptual e-MTB clearly embodies Honda’s sporty DNA. Its design is directly inspired by the legendary Honda RN01 DH, a downhill mountain bike that competed in the World Cup in the mid-2000s and won the title in 2005. It features a rare aluminum mono-arm architecture in the world of off-road cycling, but one that Honda has already proven in competition. While the RN01 used a titanium gearbox, the electric concept adopts a central motor integrated at the bottom bracket, the power and origin of which Honda does not specify.

The frame is built on a “thin-wall” aluminum structure, a lightweight wall-molding technology used by Honda in automotive and motorcycle applications. This allows for a combination of rigidity, lightness, and precise assembly. The choice of components confirms the high-end and committed direction of the project: Fox Float X Performance Elite suspension at the rear, Fox 36 Performance fork at the front, Shimano XT four-piston brakes, DT Swiss XM 1700 wheels, and Maxxis Minion DHR II tires. The Shimano XT transmission excludes the use of the SRAM Eagle Powertrain, contrary to some rumors.

On-Demand Recharge

However, the most unique element is undoubtedly the external battery presented alongside the bike. Mounted on wheels, it is designed to recharge the e-MTB multiple times autonomously, for example during van trips or camping. Honda has even integrated a small toolbox into it, designed for outdoor uses.

No production or commercialization announcements have been made. As is often the case at such shows, this is primarily a laboratory for ideas. Nonetheless, following Yamaha’s return to the European electric bike market, Honda shows that it is closely monitoring this rapidly evolving segment.
