More than 400,000 residents of Île-de-France have already benefited from bike purchase assistance, confirming the success of the program.
Since 2020, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) has been actively supporting cycling through a purchase assistance program that has enjoyed widespread success. Over 400,000 applications have already been submitted, representing nearly 150 million euros paid to the region’s residents.
The goal is clear: to reduce the number of motorized vehicles and triple bike usage by 2030. To achieve this, IDFM is relying on three levers: the Véligo Rental service, the purchase assistance program, and the development of secure parking solutions near train stations.
The financial aid covers seven types of bicycles. Residents can obtain €400 for an electric-assist model, a folding bike, or a non-assisted cargo bike, and up to €600 for an electric cargo bike. People with disabilities can benefit from €1,200 for an adapted bike. Electrification kits qualify for €200, and young people aged 15 to 25 can receive €100. Refurbished bikes are also eligible, and a new application can be submitted after five years.
According to the reported figures, 74% of the assistance concerns electric-assisted models, compared to 12% for cargo bikes and 10% for folding bikes. Most notably, the impact on usage is significant: 61% of beneficiaries report using their bikes more often, sometimes years after purchase, and 81% claim to ride year-round.
