After 25 years of good and loyal service, the latest Audi TT has rolled off the production lines in Györ, Hungary.

And yes, all good things must come to an end… the Audi TT is definitively bidding farewell to the German manufacturer’s lineup. Over its 25-year history, a total of 662,762 TT models have been produced.

The American designer Freeman Thomas, under the direction of Peter Schreyer, then Head of Design, created this innovative sports car. Audi showcased this concept to an enthusiastic audience at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show in September 1995. The model name “TT” references the legendary Tourist Trophy race on the Isle of Man, one of the oldest motorsport events in the world, where NSU and DKW achieved great success with their motorcycles. The name “TT” also recalls the sporty NSU TT of the 1960s. The fact that the Audi TT Coupe deliberately deviated from the brand’s usual naming conventions emphasized the complete novelty of the model.

In December 1995, the decision was made to put the Audi TT Coupé into series production. Torsten Wenzel, Audi’s exterior designer who contributed to transitioning the concept into production, recalls: “For us, the greatest compliment was when specialized press noted appreciatively that little had changed between the concept and the series model, although we had to, of course, adapt many details due to the technical specifications of the production version, including the proportions.” For Wenzel, the Audi TT remains “a rolling sculpture, with surfaces and lines of the highest quality.”

In 1998, the series production of the TT Coupé began. A year later, Audi launched the TT Roadster. Like the show car and the Audi A3 introduced in 1996, the sports car was based on the transverse-engine platform of the VW Golf IV. The second-generation Audi TT was launched in 2006 (Coupé) and 2007 (Roadster), based on the second-generation platform of the Audi A3. The third, and thus final, generation of the Audi TT was launched in 2014.

Now, let us ask THE question: When will we see a revival in electric form? Shall we take bets?
