2024 ends with nearly stagnant new car sales in December. So stay positive for 2025!

In December 2024, new car sales increase very slightly by 1% compared to December 2023, which had one fewer business day. Throughout 2024, the market nonetheless declined by 3%, with 1,718,412 registrations compared to 1,774,722 the previous year. These figures are announced by AAA Data, a specialist in auto data, which reports 183,662 cars registered in December, a small improvement compared to 2023.

After a strong recovery in 2023 with a growth of 16% and a good start to 2024, sales slowed down in spring, with an annual loss of 56,310 units. Compared to pre-Covid times, the situation is even more striking because nearly half a million new cars are missing!

All sales channels are down, but companies, which account for 14% of the market, are the most affected with a 12% decline. Individuals (46% of the market) and long-term rentals (15%) are also decreasing, but more moderately at -3%.

On the fiscal side, things are also changing! After the government’s resignation in early December, the penalty remains at the same level for now. But be careful, the upcoming budget, expected in spring, could restart the planned increases. Already, plug-in hybrids have lost their advantages and are no longer exempt from the weight-based penalty, and now only benefit from an exemption of 200 kg.

The ecological bonus was cut on December 2. It is now capped at 4,000 euros for low-income households with a fiscal income not exceeding 16,300 euros. For those with income between 16,300 and 26,200 euros, the aid drops to 3,000 euros, and to 2,000 euros beyond that, representing a sharp decrease of 2,000 euros compared to the previous scale.
