The 2 CV Spot celebrates its 50th anniversary: the little orange that changed everything!
Exactly 50 years ago, Citroën launched its very first limited series with the joyful 2 CV Spot, a brilliant idea that became a sensation in just a few days.
While Citroën continues to produce special series for its current models like the Collection 2026, let’s look back at the ancestor of all: the 2 CV Spot, this little two-tone bomb that invented the concept exactly fifty years ago.
An idea born under the pencil of Serge Gevin
It all began in 1974 in the workshop of graphic designer Serge Gevin. He proposed two projects to Citroën: one dark and sporty, the other ultra-festive with a Ténéré orange and Meije white dress, a striped canopy like a deckchair, and an irresistible seaside atmosphere. It was the second one that won hearts!
After two years of development, the prototype was discreetly photographed in Honfleur in winter 1976. Production started at the end of February in Levallois. Since the name “Transat” (suggested by Gevin’s wife) was already taken, the punchier “Spot” was chosen.
A solar 2 CV
The 2 CV Spot is a true little party on wheels: a two-tone body in Ténéré Orange/Meije White, striped orange and white door panels, upholstery in Venetian Orange jersey fabric, stainless steel hubcaps from Dyane, and a visible “Spot” sticker on the front doors.
Based on the 2 CV 4, it features a 435 cc engine (more than 100 km/h and only 5.4 l/100 km), all for 13,600 francs.
On April 10, 1976, Citroën innovated again: a large national competition across the entire network to present it. The result? 1,800 available units… sold out in just a few days! Dealers were overwhelmed, with the last deliveries stretching into June. A success that even crossed borders: it would also be produced in Belgium and sold in Europe (with a 602 cc engine for certain markets like the UK and Switzerland).
50 years later, still a star
In 2026, the 2 CV Spot proves it has lost none of its charm. It will be one of the stars of two major events:
- The National Meeting of 2 CV Clubs of France (May 13-17, 2026 in Villiers-sur-Loir, Loir-et-Cher): nearly 3,000 Deuches are expected for a great festive weekend with drives, entertainment, and an exhibitor village. L’Aventure Citroën will be present, and the public is welcome on May 14, 15, and 16.
- The Epoqu’Auto show in Lyon (November 6-8, 2026): the Spot is proudly featured on the official poster, a great recognition for this popular icon. L’Aventure Citroën will welcome it in Hall 5. Fifty years later, this bold and joyful little car remains proof that a good idea, a bit of color, and a lot of spirit can create a legend. Thank you Serge Gevin, and happy birthday to the Spot!
