The Porsche 911 switches to hybrid technology

British colleagues from Autocar magazine claim that the future 911 GT2 RS will be equipped with a new flat-six engine featuring hybrid technology similar to the race-spec 919 Hybrid.
There will never be a diesel engine under the hood of a Porsche. In the early 2000s, Porsche president Wendelin Wiedeking told journalists that “Pleasure begins at 4,000 rpm” and that there would never be diesel in a Porsche tank. However, with the emergence of Euro standards and the increasing penalties in certain markets, the manufacturer developed a Diesel Cayenne in 2009, equipped with an Audi engine.
And while purists of the brand were outraged, sales of the German SUV skyrocketed… until Dieselgate scandals emerged, along with the rise of hybrid petrol engines, considered more “virtuous”.
Porsche 911, and these rumors about electrification are now almost confirmed by our colleagues at Autocar, who believe that the upcoming 911 GT2 RS planned for 2026 will feature a hybrid engine.
A convoluted plan
It would then be equipped with a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine, to which the engineers would add a battery similar to the one used in the 919 Hybrid race car. This lithium-ion technology battery, cooled by air (!), would be located behind the seats, and the GT2 RS Hybrid would also feature an electric motor mounted on the transmission, operating at a 400V system.
This powerful combination would enable the model to develop over 700 hp, but more notably, the torque value would exceed 1,000 Nm! Despite the expected added weight, acceleration should become even more intense.
