Audi Nuvolari: the crazy bet of a 10,000 rpm hybrid V8

Audi Nuvolari

With its new Audi Nuvolari, presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Audi unveils the most powerful production car in its history.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed served not only as a showcase for Audi’s new design. By evolving the Nuvolari on the legendary British hill climb with Tom Kristensen behind the wheel, the manufacturer especially highlighted an extraordinary engine that opens a new chapter in the history of its sports cars.

Under its carbon body, the Audi Nuvolari features a unique hybrid powertrain. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, positioned centrally at the rear, develops 800 hp on its own and can reach 10,000 rpm, an exceptional speed for a production turbocharged engine. Three axial-flow electric motors, each with 110 kW, complement the system, bringing the total power output to 1,001 hp (736 kW).

A monster of technology

The technical architecture is particularly sophisticated. Two electric motors are placed on the front axle to ensure a fully electronically controlled quattro all-wheel drive and instantaneous torque vectoring. The third motor is integrated between the V8 and the transmission. Powered by a 7.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, this system optimizes acceleration while recovering energy during braking, directly inspired by technologies developed in competition.

The announced performance immediately places the Audi Nuvolari among the references of the segment. Audi claims a 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds, a 0 to 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and a top speed of over 350 km/h. But beyond the numbers, it’s the integration of technologies that impresses: active aerodynamics, new Audi Space Frame chassis, next-generation quattro transmission, and electronic management work together to offer maximum efficiency on both road and track.

Produced in only 499 units, the Audi Nuvolari is not just a successor to the R8. It heralds a new generation of supercars where hybridization becomes a tremendous performance enhancer rather than just a tool for reducing emissions. A spectacular demonstration for which Goodwood provided the perfect backdrop.
