The Toyota Hilux, a monument of robust pick-ups and not exactly a symbol of sobriety, can now benefit from Energy Savings Certificates. But beware of the subtle play of engine options.
It took some boldness, and Toyota does it with cleverness and a lot of intelligence. Mentioning “Hilux”, a 2.8-liter Diesel engine with 204 hp, and “Energy Savings Certificates” in the same press release could almost seem like a provocation. Yet, Toyota isn’t cheating. It simply plays very skillfully with a Hilux range that has never been wider.
The big news is the opening of orders for the 48V Hybrid Hilux, offered starting at €55,900. Behind the word “hybrid”, there’s no miracle: the large pick-up retains its 2.8-liter four-cylinder Diesel engine with 204 hp, to which a mild 48-volt hybrid system is added. This allows for energy recovery during braking, improves Stop & Start functionality, and makes acceleration smoother.
This particular Hilux obviously does not qualify for the new CEE incentives announced by Toyota.
Because there is now another Hilux, 100% electric, a first in the nine generations of the model. And it is this version that opens the door to Energy Savings Certificates, even though we suspect it won’t make up the bulk of sales.
As an electric utility vehicle, it can benefit from a €720 incentive for individuals and €1,260 for businesses. Not enough to turn its owner into a degrowth advocate, but the symbolism is quite delightful: the Hilux can officially receive aid aimed at promoting energy savings!
Toyota goes even further with its other electric utility vehicles. The CEE incentive can reach €9,190 for businesses on the Proace 75 kWh and Proace Max, notably due to bonuses granted to vehicles assembled in the European Economic Area.
