Lotus Unveils Its All-Electric Plan

Lotus Eletre X

While the brand had committed to an entirely electric range, Lotus is making a significant strategic shift.

The Sino-British manufacturer has just announced the introduction of a new hybrid technology called X Hybrid, which will debut in Europe on a new version of the Lotus Eletre electric SUV. This evolution confirms that Lotus is no longer exclusively relying on fully electric vehicles for its future models.

Unveiled in Shanghai on March 6, 2026, the X Hybrid technology combines advanced electric architecture with a thermal engine used as an energy generator. This hybrid system aims to maintain the performance and responsiveness of an electric vehicle while offering significantly greater range. The announced maximum power reaches 952 hp (700 kW) thanks to two electric motors, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds.

Another Electric Lotus?

One of the main selling points of this new platform is its range. Lotus claims a combined range of over 1,200 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. In 100% electric mode, the vehicle could travel up to 350 kilometers thanks to a 70 kWh battery. This “electric first” operation would allow it to handle most daily commutes without resorting to the thermal engine.

The first European application of this technology will be named Eletre X, a new variation of Lotus’s electric SUV. Its market launch in Europe is scheduled for June 2026, with first deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of the same year. The final technical specifications for Europe will be communicated as the commercialization approaches.

The platform is based on a 900-volt electric architecture, allowing for very fast charging times. Lotus mentions a charging time from 20% to 80% in about nine minutes under optimal conditions. The system can operate in several modes: 100% electric propulsion, series hybrid, or parallel hybrid, to optimize energy efficiency and performance according to driving conditions.

According to Qingfeng Feng, CEO of Lotus Technology, this technology aims to reconcile performance, range, and driving pleasure.

With this new strategy blending electric and hybrid cars, Lotus seems to be adopting a more pragmatic approach to energy transition. This choice could appeal to some of its customer base, which is still attached to thermal engines while wanting to benefit from the advantages of electrification.
