MG ZS Hybrid+

Hard to imagine that at such a price, the MG could compete with much more expensive compact urban SUVs.

A few months ago, the MG ZS was available in thermal or electric versions. The only common denominator was a rock-bottom price and equipment typically found in higher ranges. The ZS is now hybrid and doesn’t seem to have given up its good habits.

It mainly gains a bit of volume with a length of 4.43m (+11 cm) and a width of 1.82m (+1 cm), but retains a harmonious line thanks to being just under the height regulations. Interior space is slightly increased with a wheelbase extended by 3 cm to 2.61 m and especially very sensible layout choices. The ZS doesn’t exude fun inside, but everything is in its place without frivolity or embellishments.

The new MG ZS receives the non-plug-in Hybrid+ powertrain introduced by the MG3. Generally, when we talk about a non-plug-in hybrid, there is a strong likelihood that electrification only serves to reduce CO2 emissions. Occasionally, it may provide a little boost to acceleration, but real hybrids that can function effectively in both electric and thermal modes are rare. No worries on the ZS side, which has clearly chosen to emphasize electric propulsion, and that’s a good thing!

MG focuses on hybrid

Its Hybrid+ powertrain consists of a 1.5-liter 75 kW gasoline engine and a 100 kW electric motor paired with a 1.83 kWh battery. This architecture shakes up the balance between the two engines, which until now favored the thermal. Beyond its high efficiency, this electrification technology delivers excellent performance. Ultimately, it offers a generous power of 195 hp, allowing it to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and provide responsive acceleration as the 80-120 km/h interval is completed in 7.2 seconds.

From the first ‘Standard’ trim level, the new MG ZS Hybrid+ is well-equipped with a 10.25-inch HD infotainment system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, a 7-inch driver display, rear parking sensors with a rearview camera, automatic headlight activation, and keyless start. For 24,000 euros, one can’t expect much more, and while one could continue to look for flaws, the end result is excellent. Naturally, one shouldn’t expect a modern beast with very classic, even somewhat bland, exterior and interior styling. A car is purchased with both heart and reason, but the latter will certainly prevail at the moment of signing the order form.
