124 Years Ago, Henry Ford’s Failure Gave Birth to Cadillac
On August 27, 1902, the Cadillac Automobile Company was officially born in Detroit. A prestigious brand born from an astonishing story: just a few months earlier, the company was still named Henry Ford!
This shows that one failure can sometimes hide another… much more glorious one. In 1902, Henry Ford is not yet the automotive giant we know today. His second industrial attempt, the Henry Ford Company, is even short-lived.
Ford and his investors do not share the same vision. The engineer wants to devote more energy to the development of racing cars, while his financiers wish to quickly market automobiles. The disagreement becomes so significant that Ford ultimately leaves the company.
An Unexpected Comeback
His former associates then consider liquidating the company and turn to a renowned engineer from Detroit, Henry Martyn Leland, to evaluate the machines and facilities. But Leland has another idea: rather than selling everything, why not continue to manufacture cars?
He just happens to have a single-cylinder engine originally proposed to Oldsmobile. Coupled with the facilities and work left by Ford’s company, it can serve as the basis for a new automobile.
The idea convinces the investors. A decisive meeting occurs on August 22, 1902, a date now celebrated by Cadillac as its anniversary. However, historical documents from Detroit mark the founding of the Cadillac Automobile Company on August 27, 1902.
The name pays homage to Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit. The first car is completed a few weeks later and the brand makes a splash at the New York Auto Show in 1903, where it records over 1,000 orders. Henry Ford, meanwhile, will quickly bounce back: the Ford Motor Company will be born in 1903.
Ironically, the failure of his previous company will have contributed to the birth of one of his future great rivals. Without Henry Ford, Cadillac might never have existed.
