The Strange McMurtry Spéirling Sets a New Record (Video)
One year after its record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the McMurtry Spéirling took on a legendary Formula 1 circuit.
The McMurtry Spéirling is a 100% electric track car. It is a ground-effect vehicle, with its suction effect on the track provided by a “fan.” A sort of vacuum that removes air from beneath the car to better anchor the tires to the road and eliminate body movements.
On June 8, 2024, while the car was running at 75% power and 75% downforce, it achieved a lap time of 1’24″43 on the F1 circuit in Hockenheim. To give you an idea of the performance, this time is 14.1 seconds faster than the one set under the same conditions in 2022 by the exceptional Mercedes-AMG One. At 3.907 seconds quicker than the DTM qualifying time in 2020, it becomes the fastest closed-wheel car of all time on the Hockenheim circuit.
For the occasion, it was driven by former F1 driver Max Chilton, who also holds the record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
If you’re tempted to dominate everything on Track Days, keep in mind that its production is limited to 100 units and you will need to part with £895,000, which is over a million euros… before taxes.
