OFFICIAL: No “refresh of the Tesla Model Y” in 2024

Elon Musk has officially stated that no major update to the Tesla Model Y will occur this year. Disappointment?

Elon Musk has been challenged within Tesla for months. Forced to sell millions of shares of the car manufacturer to buy the social network Twitter, now named X, the South African businessman has simultaneously relinquished some power. While he remains the largest private shareholder, he no longer holds much weight against a coalition of investment funds, which have already lost billions of dollars due to the decline in the stock price on Wall Street.

Musk is going through a very difficult phase, and revelations about his daily management and his sometimes prioritized commitments to X, Starlink (satellite constellation), or SpaceX (aerospace) are increasingly annoying shareholders. So much so that his bonus of over 50 billion dollars, meant to reward him for Tesla’s (past) performance, has already been challenged in court and is now subject to a shareholder vote. Elon Musk does not allow anyone else to communicate about Tesla (or his other companies) and acts as an autocrat. Thus, on his social network X, he directly responded to a follower’s question regarding the upcoming arrival of a redesigned Tesla Model Y. Rumors are running rampant, especially with the temporary halt of the Berlin factory (Germany) for a week to update the industrial tools.

Musk therefore dashed hopes by stating that no “refreshed Model Y will be released this year“, adding that his vehicles undergo continuous improvements, and therefore, a “recent car is already better than it was 6 months ago“.

This reference particularly pertains to the Long Range Propulsion Model Y, which is more of an evolution than a revolution, with its new battery boasting an extended range of 600 km. In 2024, the priority is set on launching the Robotaxi and improving driving aids, which is the battle horse of Tesla.

However, it is always wise to take Elon Musk’s statements on his social network with a grain of salt, as not all his claims can necessarily be verified. The very cold reception of this information by financial markets could force him to revise his schedule if the stock continues to fall… or if he is pushed out following the crucial vote.
