Nissan Ariya NISMO, a poor tuning exercise
Given the fabulous competitive history of NISMO, Nissan’s sports division, this stylistic exercise is a bit disappointing.
NISMO has been entrusted by Nissan with the task of creating a sporty version of the 100% electric SUV Ariya. On paper, what could be more enticing than seeing the wizards of Nissan Motorsport take a look at an electric model for the first time? One immediately imagines extra engines, neck-breaking accelerations, finely tuned suspension systems,… But we will have to settle for aerodynamic accessories in a Fast & Furious style and a minor adjustment of the suspensions. What a disappointment!
But where is the NISMO spirit?
No matter how much we are told that the new aerodynamic package reduces drag and generates more downforce at high speeds, the additions seem frankly more aesthetic than functional. Look at the subtle yet incredibly effective work done by Tesla on the Model 3 Performance, and you will understand that everything seen on the Ariya serves no purpose on an SUV expected to never exceed 130 km/h. And what can we say about the unnecessary and expensive “high-performance tires”? Either make an ultra-sporty model like the exceptional GT-R, or add a little more flair to a model already designed for sporty use like the accessible 370Z.

The interior is no more cheerful with its small touches of red and its sporty seats that aren’t really sporty. When we see the treasures of inventiveness that Nissan is capable of, we really wonder why they got into this mess. Moreover, adding accessories, thus increasing the price, to a model that is already too expensive compared to its competitors is not doing it any favors. A sad way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of NISMO.
