Launched into a major and intense transition towards electric vehicles, Maserati is facing the reality of a used car market where the value is dropping.

Electric cars have various good intentions. For the most well-meaning, it’s about cleaning up the planet by avoiding spewing CO2 into the atmosphere. For others, it’s about making significant savings on mileage costs with a sharply reduced energy bill, but also on the purchase price in the absence of a €60,000 eco penalty. And for the last group, it’s about achieving better performance than thermal engines.

In the case of Maserati, who will be clever enough to find the right balance between all these logics? CO2? Maybe, but not certain. Operating costs? Possible. The absence of a penalty and performance? Definitely. For example, the SUV Grecale, designed both as a thermal and electric vehicle, doesn’t hold back on its specs: 550 horsepower, 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, all-wheel drive in its Folgore electric version. The price? €111,350 in France, and zero penalty. Conversely, the Modena 4-cylinder 2.0-liter (uh…) version with 330 horsepower is offered at €91,700… + €60,000 in penalties. And the Trofeo version, equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 of 530 horsepower, will cost €187,600 (including bonus and excluding options) to have fun with…

Nice, but how much does it cost?

The switch to electric at Maserati is therefore not cheap, and even more expensive than at Porsche and the electric Macan. However, the German SUV is much more serious, premium, modern… and cheaper (starting at €82,959 in France). A proof. The embedded GPS of the Grecale is from the Peugeot-Citroën era with a frankly outdated design (see below).

Alas, Maserati hardly maintains its value, with a used price droppping below €100,000 after just six months on the market. With its XXL 105 kWh battery, the Grecale Folgore might suggest a very generous range, which is not the case. In WLTP mixed cycle, range doesn’t exceed 487 km. Charging climbs to 22 kW on AC, and painfully to 150 kW on DC. This is far from the market benchmarks, including again the Porsche Macan.

Moreover, a large battery means enormous weight: 2,480 kg empty. Needless to say, the dynamism isn’t very impressive. This vehicle exhibits all the flaws typical of Stellantis models: excessive mass, high prices, and rather low autonomy and charging speeds.

Ultimately, a Maserati electric is even more expensive than a Porsche Macan 4S (606 km range and 270 kW fast charging) offered from €93,091 in France.
