A new world speed record!
Rimac thought its world speed record for production electric cars was unbreakable, but it may have been surpassed.
The Japanese electric hypercar manufacturer Aspark seems poised to claim the top speed record for a production electric vehicle after one of its prototypes, the Owl SP600, reached 438.7 km/h during testing in Germany. If this speed record set by the Aspark Owl SP600 is confirmed with the production of the series model, it would easily surpass the current record of 412 km/h held since 2022 by the Croatian electric hypercar Nevera from Rimac.
This record was recorded on June 8 at the Papenburg test track in Lower Saxony, Germany, with Marc Bsseng, a former GT and touring driver experienced in extreme testing. He was able to take advantage of the two 4-kilometer straight sections of the test track to exploit the full potential of the Japanese electric dragster.
A breather for Rimac
Aspark has not communicated the complete specifications of the Owl SP600 but claims it produces much more than the 1,984 horsepower of its first hypercar, the Owl, of which only 50 units were made. For the record to be certified, the car will need to replicate the feat once it goes into production. Rimac is thus still the holder of the top speed record for an electric car, but given Aspark’s recognized seriousness, it may be time to get back to work. The next step could be the absolute speed record for a production car, regardless of the type of engine, held by SSC Tuatara since 2021 with 455 km/h!
