Do the French really hate cars?

While the Auto Show is in full swing, its organizers unveil a delightful study on the relationship between the French and their cars.

The main question is whether it is still possible in France in 2024 to emphasize the French passion for cars when the social and political climate is leaning towards extreme autophobia.

To understand this paradox, the Mondial reached out to a reference, Ipsos, one of the world leaders in market research and opinion polling, present in 90 markets and employing nearly 20,000 people. The polling institute studied conversations on social media, surveyed a community of online enthusiasts, and analyzed the opinions of the French during a major survey conducted between July 16 and September 16, 2024. This study reveals that 81% of the French say they are emotionally engaged with their car, which “accompanies them through the different stages of their life”.

But is it possible today to do without a car? There are indeed voluntary efforts aimed at prioritizing public transportation and gentle mobility. A minimum for urban dwellers who are really spoiled in this regard in France. Yet, the car remains an essential part of the lives of 80% of the French who claim they cannot live without it. 54% consider the car irreplaceable. And yes, there is life outside the cities!

Despite market transformations and environmental challenges, the enthusiasm of the French for automobiles does not wane. Technological advances, particularly in electric and hybrid drivetrains, play a crucial role in this shift in perception, reinforcing the link between innovation and passion. 8 out of 10 French people (79%) agree that “we are heading for a climate disaster if we do not quickly change our habits”, a number that has increased by 4 points compared to 2013. 78% believe that “it is possible to reconcile the joy of driving with respect for the environment” and 73% consider that “the environmental impact of cars is constantly improving”.

Finally, while there is an effort to elevate automobiles as a symbol of absolute evil, for 64% of the French, “the car is a source of pleasure”. So there is still hope.
