Insuring Your Car Will Always Cost More in 2025

Leocare provides a bleak but clear-eyed assessment of the current state of the car insurance market in France.

Auto insurance rates are expected to continue rising in 2025, with an anticipated increase of 4% to 6%, or two to three times the inflation rate (+1.6%). This increase results from several factors, including the revaluation of the “Natural Cat” surcharge (from 6% to 9%), aimed at covering natural disasters. Added to this are higher claims due to weather hazards, a rise in thefts, and increased costs of raw materials and labor. In short, climate change, inflation, and insecurity create an explosive cocktail for policyholders.

Leocare, a neo-insurance specialist, examined the rates offered in the 100 most populated cities in France. The study is based on a typical profile: a driver of a gasoline hatchback, insured for two years without claims or serious infractions, with a “Comprehensive” policy and a driver protection cap of one million euros. The results highlight significant disparities between cities, which can exceed €20 per month.

In 2025, Ajaccio, Marseille, and Antibes lead the ranking of the most expensive cities for car insurance. However, Île-de-France stands out with five cities among the top ten: Blanc-Mesnil, Argenteuil, and Saint-Denis have average monthly premiums exceeding €55. These high amounts are explained by significant claim rates, including frequent thefts and accident-prone roads.
