Born in the agricultural world, Ferruccio Lamborghini transformed his frustration with Ferrari into an automotive legend.

On October 30, 1963, an Italian industrialist named Ferruccio Lamborghini gave birth to a brand that would redefine automotive luxury: Automobili Lamborghini. This farmer’s son, passionate about mechanics, had already made a fortune manufacturing agricultural tractors. After World War II, his company Lamborghini Trattori had become one of the symbols of Italian reconstruction, providing farmers with robust, simple, and efficient machines.

Nothing at the time destined Ferruccio to compete with Ferrari. Yet it was a quarrel between two strong-willed men that changed his fate. A great enthusiast of sports cars, Lamborghini owned several Ferraris, which he found too noisy and uncomfortable for the road. Frustrated by their repeated breakdowns, he decided to speak directly to Enzo Ferrari. The exchange became legendary when the latter reportedly replied, with cutting disdain:

“You make tractors, not cars. Stick to your field.”

Wounded in his pride, Ferruccio decided to prove him wrong. In 1963, he founded his own car brand in Sant’Agata Bolognese, near Modena, with the ambition to create powerful, reliable, and luxurious GTs. A few months later, at the Turin Motor Show, he unveiled his first creation: the Lamborghini 350 GTV.

This elegant GT hid under its hood a 3.5-liter V12 engine designed by Giotto Bizzarrini, one of the most talented engineers of the time. But according to legend, the engine was not yet operational at the time of the show: Lamborghini reportedly filled the engine bay with bricks so the car would keep the right stance during its exhibition.
