H24EVO: the technical challenges of switching to Toyota’s hydrogen V6
Equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 combined with hybrid technology, the H24EVO compels MissionH24 to rethink the integration of its powertrain and energy management.
Installing an internal combustion engine in a prototype developed around hydrogen is not just a matter of changing suppliers. For the H24EVO, the arrival of the Toyota Racing V6 opens up an integration project, the first details of which were unveiled on September 26 in Fuji.

“Significant engineering work is being carried out jointly between the teams at MissionH24 and Toyota Racing to integrate the engine into the H24EVO,” explains Bassel Aslan, technical director of the program. This particularly involves “the design of the mechanical interfaces between the engine, the chassis, and the gearbox.”
However, the challenge goes beyond just mountings and load transmission. Engineers also need to define communications between the various components, electrical interfaces, controls, and associated software. In other words, they must make the internal combustion engine work in conjunction with the other systems of the prototype, including its hybrid system.
This architecture differs from that of the LMPH2G and H24, which used a fuel cell and gaseous hydrogen. The H24EVO will utilize liquid hydrogen, designed to power a 3.5-liter V6 built for competition. With the hybrid contribution, the expected maximum power reaches 650 kW, or approximately 884 hp.

But power alone is not enough in endurance racing. “This engine also offers high efficiency, a key advantage for optimizing the use of the onboard liquid hydrogen and thus the vehicle’s range,” emphasizes Aslan. However, the press release does not specify the capacity of the tanks or the power distribution between the thermal and electric systems.
According to Jean-Michel Bouresche, co-president of MissionH24, this engine will allow for “a significant leap, whether in terms of credibility or performance.” With the ELMS prototypes now in sight.
