New Volkswagen ID. Cross: price, range, features… everything you need to know about the compact electric SUV

Volkswagen ID. Cross

With the ID. Cross, Volkswagen is launching a new compact electric SUV set to play a key role in its strategy.

Positioned below the ID.4 and ID.5, this model inaugurates a new generation of MEB+ vehicles with a price tag of less than 28,000 euros, a well-crafted presentation, and technologies previously reserved for higher segments.

Volkswagen expands its family of electric models with the ID. Cross, a new compact SUV that represents one of the brand’s most significant launches in the coming years. As the German manufacturer aims to accelerate the democratization of its electric range, this new model aspires to make MEB+ platform technologies accessible to a much wider audience.

Commercialized in France starting at around 27,995 euros for its entry-level version, the ID. Cross positions itself as an electric alternative to traditional urban SUVs. Pre-orders open on July 15 for the higher versions, while the base Trend trim will arrive in October.

A compact SUV with high ambitions

At 4.15 meters long, the ID. Cross slots into the compact SUV segment, where competition is intensifying. However, thanks to its MEB+ electric platform, Volkswagen announces a greater interior space than the thermal T-Cross.

The trunk offers 475 liters, with additional storage space under the floor and a 25-liter frunk designed for charging cables or small items.

In terms of style, Volkswagen adopts a deliberately understated design with taut lines, a floating roof, and a characteristic light signature. The more equipped versions receive IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, 3D rear lights, and illuminated Volkswagen logos.

A determined step up in quality

The ID. Cross also marks a significant evolution in the perceived quality of Volkswagen’s electric models. The dashboard extensively uses fabric coverings, while the cabin aims for a warmer ambiance than earlier ID models.

The driver benefits from a 10.25-inch digital cockpit, complemented by a 12.9-inch central touchscreen. Volkswagen even offers a “retro” display inspired by the Golf I, reproducing a virtual analog gauge.

Depending on the versions, equipment may include a Harman Kardon audio system of 425 W, heated, electric, and massaging front seats, a panoramic roof, and customizable ambient lighting.

Up to 427 kilometers of range

The ID. Cross will rely on the new APP290 electric motor, offered in three power levels:

  • 85 kW (116 hp)
  • 99 kW (135 hp)
  • 155 kW (211 hp)

Two batteries will be available, with net capacities of 37 kWh or 52 kWh. The latter allows for a range of up to 427 kilometers according to WLTP standards.

Charging on alternating current reaches 11 kW, while DC fast charging enables the battery to go from 10 to 80% in about 23 to 24 minutes, depending on the chosen battery.

Innovative technologies in this segment

Volkswagen also aims to distinguish the ID. Cross by its level of technological equipment. The SUV can receive several systems usually reserved for higher-end vehicles.

Among them are:

  • Connected Travel Assist, capable of automatically detecting traffic lights and stopping the vehicle at a red light;
  • Park Assist Pro, allowing some parking maneuvers to be performed remotely via a smartphone;
  • 360° Area View panoramic vision;
  • DCC adaptive suspension, available on the 211 hp version.

The vehicle also comes standard with the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, capable of powering electrical devices up to 3.6 kW.

A model set to play a major role

Following the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI, the ID. Cross represents a new step in the renewal of Volkswagen’s electric range. By offering a relatively affordable compact SUV with a range exceeding 400 kilometers and features that have been scarce in this segment, the manufacturer aims to attract a broader clientele than that of the earlier ID models.

Beyond its technical characteristics, this launch carries significant strategic importance. In an increasingly competitive European market, where Chinese manufacturers are ramping up their offensive on accessible electric vehicles, the ID. Cross will need to contribute to strengthening Volkswagen’s presence in the core market and become one of the main drivers of growth for its electric range.
