Mercedes-AMG Tackles Electric Turns!

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+ opens a new, decidedly electric era for the sporty branch of the German brand.

Gone is the turbo four-cylinder that built its reputation: the compact adopts a fully electric powertrain without sacrificing its high-performance positioning.

The disappearance of the thermal engine is undoubtedly the most significant evolution of this new CLA 45. Developed on the electric platform of the latest generation of the CLA, it features a three-motor electric architecture with two motors located on the rear axle. The system produces up to 500 kW, or 680 hp, while the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive benefits from particularly refined electronic management of torque between the rear wheels.

Artificial Pleasures?

Mercedes-AMG claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h with the Performance package. The 94.5 kWh battery, compatible with an 800-volt architecture, allows for charging at direct current up to 330 kW. According to the WLTP cycle, the range can reach nearly 670 kilometers on the sedan version.

Beyond performance, this CLA 45 illustrates the challenge faced by manufacturers of sporty models: to preserve the character of their cars despite the abandonment of the internal combustion engine. To achieve this, Mercedes-AMG has developed a series of gimmicks aimed at enhancing the driving sensations, including a simulation of gear shifts, a specific sound ambiance, and work on the feedback perceived by the driver. The CLA 45 4MATIC+ represents an important milestone in AMG’s strategy. More than just an electric version of an existing model, it signifies the brand’s entry into a new generation of sports cars, where the pursuit of performance is now driven by innovative technologies rather than by increasing engine displacement.
