Bruce McLaren’s Dream Finally Comes to Life
Almost 60 years after its first appearance, the first road car imagined by Bruce McLaren is being revived.
Before F1, and long before the supercars that built McLaren Automotive’s reputation, there was a dream. Bruce McLaren believed that a road car could deliver the sensations of a true racing machine. A prototype emerged from the workshops, and the owner/driver oversaw the development by taking it to the circuits himself. Sadly, his sudden death during a testing session at Goodwood on June 2, 1970, prevented his vision from becoming a reality.

This dream takes on a new dimension today with the rebirth of the M6GT, reconstructed by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) and unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2026.
Far from a simple replica, this M6GT is a complete recreation carried out in strict adherence to the original project. MSO teams found the original body molds, utilized plans and photographs preserved in the manufacturer’s archives, and restored or remanufactured every part to remain true to Bruce McLaren’s vision.
A race-bred McLaren for the road
The car is built on an original M6A chassis, receives a Chevrolet Small Block V8 compliant with 1970 specifications, paired with a gearbox from the same period. The original suspension has been completely rebuilt, while some components required the manufacture of parts that had become unavailable. From the aluminum rivets, identical to those used at the time, every detail showcases a genuine craftsmanship effort.

The interior also regains its original atmosphere with green vinyl seats, a hand-turned walnut gear lever knob, and instrumentation faithful to the prototype that Bruce McLaren drove daily in the late 1960s.
Painted in an exclusive shade called Colnbrook White, in homage to Bruce McLaren’s first workshop near Heathrow, this M6GT also echoes the white and green livery of his first Formula 1 car, the M2B from 1966.

This rebirth has immense symbolic significance. Bruce McLaren never had the time to realize his road car project before his passing in 1970. It would take until the legendary McLaren F1, twenty-five years later, to see his idea come to fruition. With this restored M6GT, McLaren finally completes the circle and reminds us that all its supercars trace their origins back to this pioneer that remained in the shadows for so long.
