A Dakar-winning Defender for grocery shopping

Defender Dakar

Winner of the Stock category at Dakar 2026, the Defender D7X-R leaves the desert to give birth to the Defender Dakar, a road-legal version boasting 635 hp.

There are several ways to go grocery shopping. In an electric city car, by bike… or behind the wheel of a Defender directly derived from a Dakar winner. Unveiled as a preview at The Quail during the Monterey Car Week, the new Defender Dakar has clearly chosen the third option.

The recipe is quite tasty. In 2026, the Defender D7X-R won the Stock category at Dakar in its very first participation, with three cars finishing first, second, and fourth. A few months later, Defender transforms this rally-raid machine into a road-legal model.

A True Civilian Version

And there’s no settling for a few stickers. The Defender Dakar retains the D7x architecture, the transmission, the powertrain, and especially the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 of the D7X-R, which is itself derived from the Defender OCTA. Freed from the constraints of race regulations, it now delivers 635 hp and 750 Nm.

The rest matches the tone: 35-inch tires, 20-inch forged wheels, coil spring suspensions with Bilstein shocks, widened tracks, and increased ground clearance. Even the Flight Mode, developed to soften landings after jumps, is retained. Probably unnecessary for navigating the speed bumps in a Carrefour parking lot, but you never know.

Visually, there’s no chance of blending in: carbon air intakes and hood, widened fenders with visible rivets, roof lights, reinforced protections, and rally mud flaps. The Dakar Sand and Yanbu Turquoise combination completes the look.

Inside, four seats, competition-style front seats, and even optional four-point harnesses. There’s also a place allocated for helmets.
