BYD: The Electric Offensive Heats Up

BYD 15 million NEV

With 15 million new energy vehicles produced, BYD shows exponential industrial growth raising questions.

The Chinese manufacturer BYD reached a new milestone on December 18, 2025, by producing its 15 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), solidifying its position as a global leader in the electric and hybrid vehicle sector. The ceremony took place at the Jinan factory in China, which opened only three years ago and has become a symbol of the group’s industrial growth.

The emblematic vehicle of this milestone is a six-seat N8L SUV, from the premium DENZA brand, designed around the e3 (“e-cube”) platform and BYD’s Super Hybrid technology. This technology also equips the Z9GT, a shooting brake that will accompany DENZA’s entry into Europe in 2026.

At BYD, NEVs include 100% electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids. The manufacturer recalls that its F3DM, launched in 2008, was the first mass-produced plug-in hybrid. Since then, production has experienced exponential acceleration: it took 13 years to reach the first million NEVs, but the jump from 10 to 15 million was achieved in just 13 months. The 14 millionth NEV was produced on October 9, 2025.

The numbers are staggering

This growth is reflected in the annual figures: in the first eleven months of 2025, BYD manufactured 4.182 million vehicles, representing an 11.3% increase year-on-year. International sales reached 917,000 units, already surpassing the total for 2024. Today, BYD is present in over 110 countries, with a European network of 33 countries and nearly 1,000 sales points, which the manufacturer plans to double by the end of 2026.

At the same time, BYD continues to invest heavily in research and development, with 43.75 billion yuan (5.3 billion euros) committed in the first three quarters of 2025, bringing the cumulative investment to over 220 billion yuan. These investments support innovations in battery technology, ultra-fast charging (Flash Charging), and intelligent driving, technologies that will also be deployed in Europe starting in 2026.
