What is this new Tesla Model Y+ in China?

Tesla China has decided to completely revamp its range and naming conventions for its Model Y versions, with an additional new feature.

Tesla is abandoning its simple and sleek global communication style for a market-specific approach. In China, the marketing strategy now plays with letters to distinguish different versions. Thus, after the Tesla Model Y L (a 6-seater extended version with an 84 kWh battery), the Model Y+ is now arriving.

Factually, this version is not unfamiliar to us, as it is none other than the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive version (now called Premium Rear-Wheel Drive in North America and Europe). Interestingly, what’s most surprising is that this configuration is only now arriving in China, Tesla’s first global market.

China and the Premium Segment

The West is facing increasing economic hardship, and China only wants high-end models. After months of crisis, Tesla sales in this region have spectacularly rebounded since the launch of the Model 3. In September, Tesla China sold nearly 98,000 cars, reminiscent of its glory days.

Is this a turning point? Now, Tesla in China is expanding its Model Y lineup with options beyond the low-cost Standard version available in the US and Europe.

The Model Y+ is essentially our Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, but it features an integrated 16-inch large interior screen and various updates from the start. According to the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), this Model, codenamed Y+ (which might change name upon launch), has a single rear motor of 225 kW (306 horsepower) and an estimated range of 790 km (WLTC mixed cycle, 622 km in Europe’s WLTP cycle). It provides 5 kW more than the European version.

Another inconsistency: its curb weight. It is reported to be only 1891 kg according to the MIIT, compared to 1901 kg in Europe.

Yet, there remains a slight obstacle on the road for this Tesla Model Y+ : the Xiaomi YU7 is cheaper and offers even greater range, with up to 835 km in the CLTC cycle. Nevertheless, Tesla is expanding its lineup in China, which can only benefit the brand.
