A kind of inverted Reliant Robin, with two wheels in the front and only one in the back: the Solo EV is a quite surprising vehicle.

Designed by Canadian company ElectraMeccanica, this electric tricycle made its first appearance in Europe during the Goodwood Festival, currently taking place in the United Kingdom.

Built around a composite monocoque chassis, the Solo EV still weighs nearly 800 kilograms. It measures 3.10 meters long, 1.56 meters wide, and 1.35 meters tall.

The electric motor delivers a power of 56 hp. Connected to the sole rear wheel, it allows the small car to reach a maximum speed of 80 mph (about 130 km/h). The electricity is stored in a lithium-ion battery of 17.4 kWh. On a 120-volt outlet — the standard voltage in America — a full charge takes about 15 hours. On 220 volts, it is possible to go from 0 to 100% in 6 hours.

A Single Rider Car

Due to its compact size and unique architecture, the Solo EV cannot carry a passenger besides the driver. However, a small trunk behind the seat allows for some bags. The dashboard appears rather basic but the equipment is far from sparse. The car indeed features air conditioning, a heated seat, a rearview camera, a keyless entry system, and digital instrumentation.

A single central seat and therefore a steering wheel necessarily in the middle of the dashboard… like on a McLaren F1.

Coming to Europe Soon?

Also available in a cargo version for delivery services, the Solo EV is sold starting at $18,500 (17,500 euros). It is not yet available in Europe, but the fact that ElectraMeccanica is crossing the Atlantic to present it at Goodwood suggests that an arrival on the Old Continent is at least being considered.
