47 hydrogen buses planned for Île-de-France between 2024 and 2026

Following trials conducted on 7 units, Île-de-France Mobilités has ordered an additional 47 hydrogen buses arriving from 2024.
The Île-de-France region is investing in hydrogen vehicles. The Île-de-France transport authority has ordered 47 buses, a move supporting the transformation of the fleet with a focus on electricity and biofuels.
Two separate hydrogen bus projects
The first project is “H2 Créteil”. The city, already committed to alternative transportation with the Cable 1 cable car (C1), will produce green hydrogen. This will be generated using “electricity produced by the combustion of household waste”. It will power the first 17 hydrogen buses from the order.
The second project falls under the “Vallée Sud Hydrogen” initiative. There, the region “plans to build two green hydrogen production and/or distribution sites”, in collaboration with Hynamics, a subsidiary of the EDF group. This fuel will supply 30 hydrogen buses, but only on the routes between 2024 and 2026.
Île-de-France Mobilités has not disclosed the brand and model of the buses, nor their technical specifications. Additionally, the purchase price of these buses is unknown. However, the budget for these 47 vehicles and production sites is estimated at 48 million euros. The first hydrogen units since 2019 cost 860,000 euros each, half of which was funded by the European Union. The seven vehicles currently operate on routes between Versailles and Jouy-en-Josas and Satory-Viroflay.
A massive bus renewal plan
Beyond these dozens of hydrogen buses, the Île-de-France region is undergoing a significant transformation of its fleet. It aims to deploy 100% clean vehicles in urban areas by 2025, and throughout the region by 2029. However, the local authorities are prioritizing two other technologies: electric buses and biocarbon buses (biomethane).
The most recent order involved adopting 450 new electric buses in 2022 and 2023. A year ago, Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP announced they had “4,700 buses including 258 electric vehicles and 438 biomethane and 1,115 hybrid”.
