BMW iX2

BMW unveiled the new generation of its tall-stance Coupe X2 and announced the availability of a 100% electric version, the BMW iX2.

With the X2, BMW pioneered the coupe-style SUV trend. Basically, you take an SUV, the X1, cut the rear part diagonally to give it a descending shape, and call it a sporty variant of a vehicle that has no actual intention to be sporty. It’s like taking a sedan, raising it by 30cm, and adding off-road tires. Not really designed for… But people like it!

A real change

At BMW, the X2 is called a Sport Activity Coupé (SAC). The design clearly evolves to give it a distinct style and differentiate it from the X1, which is a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV). Regardless of the names, we have a Vehicle and a Coupé with their own identities, but at least BMW stops calling everything SUV. It’s honest of BMW. The new BMW X2’s length has increased by 194 millimeters compared to its predecessor, reaching 4,554 millimeters. It gains 21 millimeters in width, now at 1,845 millimeters, and 64 millimeters in height, now measuring 1,590 millimeters. Additionally, its increased wheelbase and broader tracks provide more space for all five occupants as well as in the trunk. The new BMW X2 has a maximum cargo capacity ranging from 560 to 1,470 liters, while the iX2 is limited to 525 to 1,400 liters.

The front face of the new BMW X2 features distinctive elements such as LED headlights with a new “Iconic” signature and an almost hexagonal BMW grille which, for the first time in the premium compact segment, is optionally available with the “BMW Iconic Glow” contour lighting.

BMW highlights electric

An all-electric variant is part of the new range from launch: the BMW iX2 xDrive30. Its two motors, one on the front axle and the other on the rear axle, together generate a combined power of 313 hp (230 kW) with the temporary boost function and a torque of 494 Nm. The BMW iX2 xDrive30 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. The 64.8 kWh usable energy from its high-voltage battery enables an estimated WLTP range of 417 to 449 kilometers. Adaptive regenerative braking and the “Max Range” function also contribute to these respectable range figures, though not exceptional.

Prices are also increasing, but it would be dishonest to compare those of the old and new X2, as the models are quite different!
