Is Peugeot 3008 aiming too high compared to the Renault Scenic?

Peugeot has made the choice of technological excess to compete with Tesla, but is this still the right target in the market?

Refusing direct confrontation. That is, for now, the first impression that emerges when comparing the technical specifications of the new SUVs from Renault and Peugeot. The former offers a more family-oriented approach in terms of practicality and pricing, while the latter has a more sporty and dynamic aim.

While the prices for the Peugeot E-3008 are not yet known, it is suspected they will be quite high and aligned with the technological excess. When the Renault Scenic offers an entry-level version with 170 horsepower and a 60 kWh battery, Peugeot begins directly with 210 horsepower and a 73 kWh battery. The logic is maintained in the so-called “Long Range” versions with 87 kWh for the Scenic and 98 kWh for the E-3008. The race for range will therefore be impossible to win. However, this gap should still be reflected in the purchase prices.

The entry-level Scenic, expected at 34,990 euros with the bonus deducted, promises 420 km of autonomy (300 km actual), while the E-3008 will ensure 525 km on paper (400 actual).

Furthermore, when Renault opts for a pragmatic architecture with 2 front-wheel drive motors, reducing development costs, Peugeot leans towards the high-end with a version featuring 4-wheel drive called “Dual Motor.” Similar to Tesla. The total power rises to 320 horsepower, while a Model Y Dual Motor has 513 horsepower. Be careful not to swing the stick and get beaten…

The battery remains unchanged at 73 kWh in this case, whereas a larger 98 kWh version might be expected. Perhaps this version will arrive later, especially since the trunk is already reduced by 50 liters. It drops from 520 to 470 liters, while the Scenic offers 545 liters. The very “cut” design of the Peugeot E-3008 contributes to this slight volume loss, but it is a conscious choice.

Peugeot assures that a larger version, most probably the E-5008, will be introduced in early 2024, to finally compete with the Scenic… which will also have an XXL version in 2025. The war of leaders is reignited. Now let’s wait for the prices to truly judge.
