Lucid Arrives in France: Behind Tesla’s Rival, a Brand on Saudi Lifeline

Lucid France

Lucid is taking advantage of the 2026 Motor Show to clarify its French launch. Spectacular electric vehicles, but a manufacturer whose finances remain significantly less appealing.

A new American brand is making its way to France. Lucid announces three initial sales and service points in the first quarter of 2027, in partnership with Emil Frey France. The goal is to exceed sixteen partner sites by December 2027. Reservations are already open, with orders expected to start in early 2027.

On paper, the arguments are impressive. The Air sedan claims up to 960 kilometers of WLTP range, depending on the version. The Gravity SUV promises up to 739 kilometers and can accommodate seven adults. This is sure to interest fans of large luxury electric vehicles. The less photogenic question remains: the solidity of the manufacturer.

Ambitious cars, colossal losses

In the first half of 2026, Lucid reported net losses of $2.06 billion, compared to $905.6 million a year earlier. The cumulative deficit reached $17.7 billion by the end of June. The company admits that its projects require capital exceeding the expected revenue from its sales.

Production has slowed to reduce inventory, layoffs have occurred, and supplier difficulties persist: the challenges are significant. Even the future more affordable models have been delayed until the second half of 2027.

Saudi support remains crucial

Lucid heavily relies on the Saudi sovereign wealth fund PIF, through Ayar. By the end of August, borrowings against its financing facility reached $1.7 billion, after a new withdrawal of $400 million. Ayar also provided $550 million in preferred stock in the spring. However, it would be inaccurate to say that only Saudis are financing Lucid: Uber has also raised its total investment to $500 million.

The French arrival thus represents both a commercial bet and a technological demonstration. To convince, Lucid will need to sell the autonomy on the road but also inspire confidence in its future.
