The BYD Dolphin 2024 Remains More Affordable in China

BYD is already introducing updates to its Dolphin, including a small battery version available from 12,900 euros in China.

Lower-cost entry? Electric cars are already mature in some leading domestic markets, such as China. Price wars are raging, and customers are not keen on large, expensive sedans. The trend is toward accessibility through ever-lower starting prices.

Thus, the BYD Dolphin is responding to the feedback from dealerships and is presenting a revised lineup for 2024. In addition to some new stylistic effects, a version with a smaller 32 kWh battery is introduced, with an officially homologated (according to the current Chinese protocol) range of 302 km. With an entry price dropping to 99,800 yuan, or €12,900, the Dolphin is making a clear statement against city cars powered by internal combustion engines.

Similar in size to a Renault Captur, the BYD Dolphin has been available in France since 2023. This new model, not yet imported to Europe, features new ventilated front seats and an induction smartphone charger.

Ideas from Europe?

Even more surprising is the new rear suspension solution, similar to the European model. In fact, it turns out that the version sold in Europe was more advanced with its independent rear suspension. Chinese drivers were complaining about a lack of comfort on their versions.

The small battery therefore complements an offering that will expand in the future. The initial 45 kWh pack is still available with a range of 420 km. Finally, BYD promises a 60 kWh version with a range exceeding 500 km.

What about its importation into Europe, where the removal of the ecological bonus has necessarily impacted sales? An more affordable offer is expected from the Chinese manufacturer. As of February 2024, the BYD Dolphin is priced at €33,900 in France.
