In a vibrant French market, with double-digit increases in registrations, hybrids are taking the lion’s share.

AAA DATA, expert in augmented data, recorded 142,598 registrations in February 2024, representing a 13% increase compared to the same month last year (126,237 units). As a reminder, sales reached 115,383 units in February 2022 and 172,438 in the same month of 2019, the last full year before the health crisis.

In terms of powertrains, hybrid cars, which account for 37% of the VPN market share, show the strongest growth with +34%. Specifically, mild hybrids (MHEV) see their registrations soar by 64%, non-rechargeable hybrids (HEV) increase by 28%, and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) by 12%.

Overall, hybrid powertrains now far surpass gasoline models, which hold a 34% market share and see very modest sales growth of 2%.

Electric vehicles (BEV), for their part, continue their momentum with a +32% increase in registrations, while diesel continues to decline. With a -31% decrease, diesel now represents only 7% of sales. Notably, GPL vehicles perform well, increasing by +11% and accounting for 4% of registrations. This positive trend is mainly driven by Dacia’s sales, with models such as Sandero, Jogger, and Duster.

Used car market heading back up

The recent uptick observed over the past few months seems to be confirming itself. The used car market is notably rebounding, with registrations increasing by 6% in February, totaling 443,813 units. The prices of used passenger cars (VPO), which had recently risen, seem to be stabilizing or even slightly decreasing, mainly due to an increase in stock levels.
