Honda Civic Hybrid: Eight Virtual Gears for Real Driving Feel
The Honda Civic e adopts eight virtual gears thanks to the S+ Shift system, introduced by the Prelude. Still boasting 184 hp, the hybrid compact also enhances its Sport trim.
Shifting gears in a car that doesn’t have a traditional gearbox: this is the proposition of the Honda Civic e. With the arrival of the S+ Shift system, the Japanese hybrid sedan aims to add character to its driving experience. This evolution is aimed at drivers who value efficiency but also seek mechanical sensations.
Following the aesthetic updates presented in 2025, Honda continues to evolve its compact model. The main novelty this time lies in the management of its powertrain: eight virtual gears, available as standard on the Sport and Advance trims when Sport mode is selected.
How do the Civic’s eight virtual gears work?
Under the hood, the Civic retains its e-hybrid architecture. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine works in tandem with two electric motors, a generator, and a traction motor. In many situations, the electric motor drives the wheels while the gasoline engine generates the necessary electricity. The latter can also directly drive the wheels when conditions allow. No charging from a plug is necessary.
The S+ Shift adds to this setup a simulation of gear changes. When shifting up, the revs of the gasoline engine drop quickly, and the electric thrust is briefly modulated. During downshifting, the revs increase to replicate the traditional throttle blip.
The driver can control these transitions with the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, while a synchronized sound accompanies the changes. The system thus genuinely affects the operation of the powertrain, beyond mere auditory effects. The goal is to make accelerations more lively and enhance driver engagement.
Still 184 hp and a consumption from 4.7 l/100 km
This evolution does not come with an increase in power. The Honda Civic hybrid retains its 184 hp and 315 Nm, with a 0 to 100 km/h time announced between 7.8 and 8.1 seconds depending on the trim. The official consumption is rated between 4.7 and 5.0 l/100 km.
Honda mentions a range of up to 850 km. This figure remains a theoretical potential: the 40-liter fuel tank and the announced minimum consumption do indeed allow for this range on paper. On the road, the actual distance traveled will depend on various factors, including the route, temperature, and driving style.
The S+ Shift primarily promises a new way to enjoy this engine. A test drive will determine whether these simulated gears provide the expected additional pleasure.
A better-equipped Sport trim, starting at €38,220
The Civic Sport also enhances its interior presentation. Red accents highlight the air vents, complemented by matching stitching on the steering wheel and the fabric and synthetic leather upholstery. A twelve-speaker Bose audio system joins its equipment. The range also includes a driver monitoring camera integrated into the Honda Sensing assistance features.
Honda France prices as of October 5, 2026:
| Trim | Listed Price | Honda S+ Shift |
| Executive | €36,920 | No |
| Sport | €38,220 | Standard |
| Advance | €41,620 | Standard |
Thus, the Sport represents the first level equipped with the S+ Shift, for €1,300 more than the Executive. This provides an additional reason to take interest in this hybrid sedan, which aims to attract buyers with both its character and its fuel consumption.
