Nouvelle Dacia SPRING

Guest on Yves Calvi’s morning show on RTL, Denis Le Vot, CEO of Dacia, revealed the starting price of the new Spring.

We are wiping the slate clean and starting over, but without too many changes to the recipe. The one of a small, lightweight, practical, low-powered electric city car, and, as we now know, still very affordable. The CEO of Dacia, Denis Le Vot confirmed this morning on RTL that the 2024 model of the Dacia Spring would be offered starting at 18,900 euros.

The “new” Spring incorporates the new stylistic code of the Franco-Romanian brand. Regarding this Spring, the fact that its production remains Chinese will once again prevent it from being eligible for the ecological bonus. So it’s not easy to compete with the Citroën ë-C3 or future Renault Twingo.

A very modern design

The good idea is to align the style of the Spring with that of its big brother Duster. The look, rear lights, color options, but also the interior are perfectly coordinated. The upgrade to a higher trim level is pleasing and should appeal. It gives less the impression of driving a tiny car.

It even plays the part of a small adventurer with plastic protections on all four corners and optional 15-inch wheels.

Inside, this refresh is found everywhere, from the steering wheel to the climate controls, including the 7-inch digital instrument cluster or the large central digital screen (which is optional except on the top-tier Extreme version) of 10 inches.

An unchanged mechanical?

Sold at 140,000 units worldwide since its launch in 2021, the Spring is thus a success, but nothing dizzying either. Dacia remains rational with a lightweight and inexpensive vehicle.

The main change is that Dacia will not offer the 45 hp motor in France. With an unchanged chassis, the Spring will only be available with a 65 hp (48 kW) motor, offering a real range of about 140 km at 14.6 kWh/100 km. A deliberate choice by Dacia, which does not want to fall into the “more and more” race. The lightweight at 984 kg makes the Spring the only 100% electric car in Europe under a ton. The manufacturer states that its customers drive an average of 37 kilometers per day at an average speed of 37 km/h, and that 75% of recharges are done at home. Wastefulness is therefore not relevant.

Still the cheapest on the market?

Sold from 18,900 euros against 18,400 euros for the previous generation, the Dacia Spring remains ineligible for a 4,000-euro bonus. And this will remain the case since production stays in China, at Dongfeng. An investment that remains significant for a daily-use car. Even more so at a crucial moment when competitors, produced in Europe like Citroën for example, are offering a much more modern, efficient product also under 20,000 euros.

The fight for an affordable small electric city car is just beginning!
