The new MG launched in May!
In one month, MG will launch the sale of the IM L6 electric sedan, its new high-end long-range model.
Don’t look towards Great Britain, MG’s historic cradle, to find this IM L6. It is a 100% Chinese creation, MG’s new nationality if you haven’t been following the automotive news in recent years.
IM aims to be MG’s premium subsidiary, similar to Acura for Honda, Lexus for Toyota, or Infiniti for Nissan. Not 100% luxury nor 100% sporty, but rather high-tech, exemplified by this famous new generation of “solid” batteries that promises record-breaking ranges and charging times. The attractive sedan seems to be born under good auspices, as 10,000 pre-orders have already been registered.

Although announced with the first ultra-fast 900 V solid-state battery in large series, it will not be fully solid, but rather hybrid. Don’t panic, however, because the high-end versions of the IM L6 that will receive this semi-solid 130 kWh battery will benefit from an almost 800 km range. The other versions will be equipped with traditional NCM batteries of 90 or 100 kWh from CATL.
New MG or first IM?
During the public presentation of the car at the last Geneva Motor Show, MG never hid that this IM branch had European ambitions. As proof, the design of the coupe sedan of the L6, which is gaining popularity on the old continent but is not successful in Asia, where a more classic, functional, or frankly sporty style is preferred. The “at the same time” approach is little appreciated by Chinese customers.

Under the hood, or rather on the chassis, there are one or more in-house motors with power outputs announced between 290 hp for the single-motor version and up to 790 hp for the sportiest versions. Enough to join the very exclusive club capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.
We will very soon know whether SAIC, MG’s parent company, will choose to badge this model as a British brand for the European versions or give the IM brand a chance. The answer will come in a few weeks, as the model will go on sale less than 2 weeks after the start of orders.
