With Elroq, Skoda aims to succeed where Volkswagen has failed
Before its world premiere scheduled for autumn 2024, a camouflaged Elroq timidly revealed itself near Amsterdam.
Ambitious 100% electric SUV, the Elroq is the first Skoda model to adopt the brand’s new “Modern Solid” style. With this camouflage, it’s not easy to guess the stylistic markers it rests upon, but the focus seems to be on habitability with practical and square volumes. Skoda announces a trunk capacity of 470 liters that can be increased to 1,580 liters with the rear bench seat folded down. It also offers numerous storage options inside with a total capacity of 48 liters, including several smart compartments. The rear deck itself is adjustable, allowing for flexible use of the rear trunk space. These are high figures for a vehicle of around 4.50 meters in length.

The familiar Skoda grille makes way for a more modern front called Tech-Deck. It is not obvious under its camouflage, but the impression of robustness is striking. For the first time, the Skoda logo is placed on the hood rather than on the grille. Ultimately, it’s modern, but we will have to see under the temporary decorations the impact of the glossy black surfaces on the visual feel.
The Volkswagen Touch
In the end, let’s set aside the look, as Skoda has chosen not to reveal it too early, and let’s focus on the essentials: the technology. The Elroq is based on the modular (MEB) platform of the Volkswagen Group and will be offered with four powertrain variants: the Elroq 50, 60, 85, and 85x. The battery capacity and corresponding power range from 170 hp (125 kW) to 300 hp (220 kW). The entry-level Elroq 50 is equipped with rear-wheel drive with 170 hp (125 kW) and a 55 kWh battery. The Elroq 60 features a 63 kWh battery and a 150 kW electric motor. The Elroq 85 and Elroq 85x variants are equipped with the same 82 kWh battery but offer two transmission modes. The rear-wheel drive Elroq 85 has a peak power of 285 hp (210 kW), which should give it a fairly playful character. The Elroq 85x includes an additional electric motor on the front axle, providing all-wheel drive as standard and peak power of 300 hp (220 kW). The range of these two high-end versions is announced to be over 560 kilometers.

All versions support fast charging in direct current, up to 175 kW for the 85 and 85x. All can be charged from 10% to 80% in less than 28 minutes. The standard battery preconditioning function preheats the battery at low ambient temperatures, thus optimizing the charging speed. The process can be initiated manually or automatically.
And what about the price, you ask? Well, we will have to wait a bit longer to know the pricing structure of the model. Time for Skoda to gauge the reception of the model by its loyal customers and to see if it’s possible to attract customers outside of the Skoda sphere. After all, what is desirable is more valuable, and this Elroq does not lack advantages! The first elements of response will come at the next Paris Motor Show where it will be presented.
