A Volkswagen ID. Buzz with a small battery is quite clever
Two new entry-level models of the ID. Buzz are debuting in September with a small 59 kWh battery.
Let’s immediately address the undeniable argument that comes to mind. A small battery costs less than a large one, so the entry-level price of the ID. Buzz is lower, and that’s good for sales! Well observed, because with a starting price of 49,990 euros, this nice electric utility vehicle opens up to a new audience.
However, equipping a large transport vehicle with a small battery that will limit its range is somewhat surprising. In the case of a long highway journey, passengers may not appreciate having to stop every two hours for more than 45 minutes to recharge the small battery. And with two hours of driving, we might be quite optimistic, as the new Pure and Pure Freestyle models powered by this 59 kWh battery offer a WLTP cycle range of only 330 km. Traveling long distances in small jumps is not viable, so why this choice?
An ID. Buzz that is unique but interesting
Well, for the simple reason that passenger transport vehicles do not only operate on highways, far from it. Many professionals limit themselves to urban journeys, and in this case, covering 300 km per day is not common. Besides, if faced with some expressways, a quick charge during lunch break and off you go.
The same goes for a large family that needs a spacious vehicle for intensive daily use but with limited kilometers traveled and has a charging station at home. We sometimes make the mistake, we admit it first, of limiting ourselves to studying a technical sheet while seeking high figures without considering the use of the vehicle in front of us. Thank you Volkswagen for this little reconsideration.
