Uber, Nissan and Wayve are partnering to launch the first autonomous robotaxis in Tokyo by the end of 2026.

Tokyo is set to welcome a new era of autonomous mobility thanks to the unprecedented partnership between Uber, Nissan, and Wayve. This pilot project plans to deploy robotaxis based on the Nissan LEAF equipped with the Wayve AI Driver autonomous driving system, accessible directly via the Uber app. This marks Uber’s first foray into autonomous vehicles in Japan and a key step in the global rollout of Wayve and Uber’s robotaxis, already planned in more than ten cities, including London.

The Nissan LEAF autonomous vehicle incorporates Wayve’s artificial intelligence, capable of learning from real-world data and adapting to new roads without relying on high-definition maps. This technology enables rapid and safe expansion in complex urban environments like Tokyo, known for its dense traffic and demanding road network.

Initially, the vehicles will operate on the Uber network with a safety operator on board. This approach allows users to test the service as part of their daily commutes while ensuring safety and reliability. Alex Kendall, CEO of Wayve, emphasizes: “Tokyo represents a major advancement for the integration of onboard intelligence in one of the most sophisticated mobility markets in the world.”

Ivan Espinosa, CEO of Nissan, clarifies: “Our collaboration with Wayve and Uber illustrates how mobility intelligence can be concretely integrated into everyday life.” For his part, Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, states that the project aims to address the driver shortage and offer users a modern and accessible transportation solution via the Uber app.
