Paris: a vote to decide the fate of shared e-scooters

The future of free-floating scooters in the capital remains uncertain. Their fate will depend on a vote by Parisians, who are invited to share their opinion in a polling.

Stop or go on? For several weeks, the city of Paris has made its hostility towards shared electric scooters no secret. Reckless users, parking issues, questionable ecological impact, precarious working conditions for employees: many grievances are voiced against them.

In a recent interview with Le Parisien, Anne Hidalgo stated that she would let Parisians decide. She also took care to specify that, personally, she would prefer to see shared scooters disappear from the capital. “My idea is that we should stop. But I will respect the vote of Parisians, even if it goes against what I would like,” she affirmed.

The fate of shared scooters in Paris to be decided in April

The consultation will take place on April 2nd, at the usual polling stations. No online voting is planned. The verdict will be known that evening. The Paris city hall will contact the concerned individuals, relying on electoral lists. According to information gathered by Le Figaro, the vote will be open to people eligible to vote in Paris and residing in the capital.

Dott, Lime, and Tier, the three operators present in Paris, have a few weeks to try to save their skin. So far, their efforts have primarily targeted Parisian officials. At the end of last year, new measures were introduced, such as banning minors and requiring scooter registration. The announcement of a vote changes the game somewhat. Now, all Parisians will need to be convinced, including those who do not use these scooters.

It is worth noting that individuals owning their own scooter have nothing to fear. The Mayor of Paris has never considered banning them as well.
