69 new safe places “Safe Place UMAY” inaugurated along the T3a tramway to combat gender-based and sexual violence.

Île-de-France Mobilités, RATP, and the UMAY app are strengthening their efforts to combat harassment and sexual violence in public transport. Following the installation of over sixty “Safe Places” on line T3b, 69 new safe places have just been inaugurated along the T3a tramway line, which connects Porte de Vincennes to Pont du Garigliano. These places, located near the stations, will be accessible via the UMAY app and staff have been trained to welcome and assist victims.

Since the launch of the first “Safe Places” in December 2023 at Auber, the initiative has been continuously expanding. With this new extension, there will now be 154 safe places available on the RATP network by the start of the 2025 school year. The goal is to provide victims with a secure space to be received, reassured, and informed about the next steps to take. The system is already functioning: on the T3b line, 52 journeys have been initiated to a Safe Place through the UMAY app since November 2024.

No longer alone in the face of violence

UMAY is a free mobile app that allows users to geolocate safe places and share their location with loved ones in case of danger. It has over 100,000 active users and lists 7,000 establishments certified as Safe Places, ranging from shops to public facilities. This year, three sports facilities in Paris near the T3a tramway will also join the initiative, training staff in the 3 R’s method: Receive, Reassure, Inform.

Meanwhile, RATP and Île-de-France Mobilités are ramping up security measures across the entire network: 3,000 security agents (more than 4,000 by 2027), the regional transport brigade, 10,000 agents in stations trained to assist victims, 5,000 emergency call points, 80,000 surveillance cameras, and the alert number 3117 available 24/7.
