Vision 32 Catamaran: The Fastest Electric Boat in the World

The Canadian outboard specialist Vision Marine Technologies set an electric water speed record, reaching 109.1 mph (175.4 km/h).

The vessel that broke the record is named Vision 32 catamaran. It is the result of a partnership between Vision Marine Technologies and Hellkat Powerboats.

The hull of the Hellkat V32 32-foot catamaran has been specially designed to house battery banks (with a capacity of 70 kWh) and thus power a pair of 180 hp E-Motion motors.

On a typical recreational boat, between 18 and 26 feet, this type of battery theoretically provides a range of 70 miles (about 112 km) at an average speed of 20 miles (32 km/h). This corresponds to approximately 3.5 hours of navigation. For comparison, a traditional gas-powered boat consumes about 120 liters of fuel per hour. Thanks to its electric technology, Vision Marine claims a 90% savings in energy and maintenance costs. Moreover, its new model is perfectly silent, odorless, and emits no fumes!

But let’s return to the record. It was set at the Lake of The Ozarks Shootout, a charity boat racing event. Shaun Torrente, current F1 H2O world champion driver, crossed the finish line of the three-quarter mile course with a top speed of 109 mph (175 km/h).

“We worked hard to optimize the electric motors, 700V batteries, cooling circuits, and hardware and software integration, all of which are essential to our success as a leader in the electric marine propulsion industry“, said Xavier Montagne, CEO of Vision Marine.

New Technology

Vision Marine is therefore utilizing its new E-Motion technology, which combines an advanced battery, an inverter, and a high-efficiency electric motor with an exclusive assembly of the transmission design and electric motor using an extended control software.

Vision Marine also manufactures and sells high-performance electric pleasure boats to its customers.
