Already a maker of pleasure boats and electric taxis, the Swedish manufacturer Candela is back with a 30-passenger shuttle set to start in 2023.

Emerging player in electric maritime mobility, Candela made a mark with its prototype C-7, followed by the serial model C-8. This pleasure boat did not stay alone for long, as the Swedish manufacturer adapted it into the P-8 electric water taxi. And now it unveils a much larger vessel.

Nautical Flyover at 30

The shuttle measures 12 meters — hence the name — and weighs only 8.5 tons, thanks to carbon fiber. The Candela P-12 can seat 30 people comfortably. The key advantage for passengers is comfort, thanks to the hydrofoil technology that soars above the water surface. Three retractable carbon wings are submerged and reduce contact with the water.

Powered by two electric motors via propellers, identical to those used in the C-8, it can achieve speeds of up to 30 knots (55 km/h). However, its cruising speed will typically be around 25 knots, or 46 km/h.

Range of the Candela P-12? Over 80 km at 25 knots.

At this speed, the Candela P-12’s 180 kWh battery could last about 80 kilometers. Once depleted, the electric boat can charge up to 200 kW via DC fast charging.

First Public Trips of the Candela P-12 in 2023

The first unit of the Candela P-12 will come into operation in 2023. It will join Stockholm’s fleet, where it hopes to eventually replace the 70 diesel ships “as well as the overloaded road transport”.

The brand explains that during peak hours in this region, the boat is faster than buses and cars for many routes. Director Erik Eklund adds that his initial idea is to deliver five units. With departures every 11 minutes, they would be more mobile and less costly than a single 200-seat diesel vessel performing two trips.

However, Candela’s ambitions are international and bold. Goal? To produce and sell “several hundred P-12s each year”.
