BMW: An emission-free boat showcased at Cannes

At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, BMW and boat manufacturer TYDE unveiled a zero-emission boat called “THE ICON”.
An innovative decarbonization project for maritime transportation was introduced by BMW and TYDE during the 76th Cannes Film Festival. At the Cannes harbor, you will find a boat named “THE ICON” which allows the German brand to shine in electric mobility on water.
The zero CO2 emissions boat features two electric motors that enable the boat to travel over 50 nautical miles (approximately 93 km on land). The boat cruises at an average speed of 24 knots (44.4 km/h) with a maximum speed of 30 knots (55 km/h). According to Filovent, the average speed of a motorized boat is 5 to 6 knots (around 10 km/h).
In collaboration with boat builder TYDE, this boat will also be equipped with luxury amenities. Buyers can thus enjoy an unforgettable experience.
THE ICON, an innovation in decarbonized mobility
Regarding the engine, THE ICON’s two electric motors can generate 100 kW of power. Additionally, six batteries normally used in a BMW i3 are onboard this vessel. They convert the 240 kWh of energy generated by the motors into a range of over 50 nautical miles at sea. Thus, BMW and TYDE highlight the field of electric mobility on the water.
The ship THE ICON also features an hydrofoil system, directly inspired by competitive sailing. According to the nautical product manufacturer Erplast, several types of foils exist. This technology reduces hull drag (friction and waves), thereby decreasing the power needed at cruising speeds.

BMW states that the foils reduce energy requirements by up to 80% compared to a conventional hull. This improves travel comfort and allows for higher speeds. Thanks to its innovative propulsion system and foil technology, THE ICON moves almost silently. Free of vibrations and shocks, the boat offers a comfortable experience without generating waves.
Inside the vessel, luxury takes precedence. The boat features a Dolby Atmos audio system, as well as LED strip lighting at the bow and stern. THE ICON also has large windows to maximize the cruising experience.
