Google Maps Integrates Electric Bikes and Scooters

To plan routes, the Google Maps app adds locations and trips on Dott, Pony, or Tier electric scooters or bikes.

Getting around is not limited to a car, walking, or public transportation. Soft mobility options, which were somewhat neglected for decades, are now an integral part of our daily lives.

Scooters and bikes are invading Google Maps

Google has understood this well and has been forming partnerships with companies in the sector for some time. You may have already noticed that many options exist for a single route. In addition to car, public transport, walking, or VTC trips, cycling options are expanding.

The app integrates two open-service rental providers, the Franco-Dutch Dott, the French Pony, and the German Tier. Their electric scooters and bikes are therefore visible in the bike tab. The route includes the objects with their locations (and the travel time to reach them), their autonomy, and of course the intended route. The approximate price also appears, for example €5 to €7 for 5 kilometers in Paris.

“For many people, the first obstacle to adopting micromobility is discovering how easily it can fit into their daily lives”, states Alexander Sprey, Senior Manager Market Development & Partner Strategy at TIER Mobility.

Many cities in France and abroad

However, it is not possible to reserve via Google Maps. The app redirects to Dott or Tier’s app to scan the nearest bike or electric scooter. Finally, the walking route also shows the vehicles as alternatives, regardless of distance.

Scooters and bikes in Google Maps are not only available in Paris. They are also found in other cities: Lyon (Dott and Tier), Bordeaux (Dott and Pony), Grenoble (Dott). Local networks also exist in the app, such as V’Lille in Lille or Bicloo in Nantes. Tier is expanding in Europe, with more than 200 cities from Norway to Italy, including Turkey and the United Kingdom.
